Artist Bio for Hilarie Couture

Hilarie started to draw at the age of two and always loved to make her own paper dolls and fashion designs.  She loved the study of people and had a talent of portraying a likeness early on…

Drawing evolved into painting with acrylic in high school, and then entering college as a fashion design and medical illustration major.  She only attended college for two years. She was frustrated because she had to take core classes for her major that had nothing to do with art, and thus left school to draw portraits on the streets around the country.   With virtually no formal art training, she was able to survive for awhile by  just selling her portraits.

The one day she met a hairdresser that traded her for a portrait and she basically stopped doing visual art for a few years and went to beauty school.  After a few years in the cosmetology field she started taking photography classes and loved developing film in the darkroom.  She pursued both the hair and photography.

Life took over and she wasn’t able to do anything artistic for about thirty years… She was involved in a negative marriage that lead to divorce, and  she had to concentrate on earning a living, instead of creating art. Two years ago she went back to college and got a degree in historic preservation which opened some doors to her renewed artistic path.   She also met a wonderful new man , remarried and he has been encouraging and promoting her to create again.  Thus, the beginning of a new  chapter in her life as an artist.

She currently seeks creativity  daily and takes art workshops of interest  ranging from oil  and watercolor painting to painting in glass, and is focusing  on a body of work to start regularly showing in galleries in the Northwest.

Statement ;  The artist’s style evolves from her love of the uniqueness in people and  the essence of time.  The work always shows a sensibility to color in every medium explored, even with a limited palette. There is always an energy in the textures that are used and a keen awareness of  portraying light and shadow in the moment.
